Chapter 4, A survey on Qualitative data and analytic Methods

"Analytic choices are what we generate  the most sufficient answers to your research Questions, and what will best represent and present the projects findings" (90).

Analyzing data is something that I think is important when conducting research. And having a lot of data and not knowing what to do with it can make or break your research. Framing you answers can help you to navigate your research to the answers you need.

"Category Construction is our best attempt to cluster the most seemingly alike things into the most seemingly alike things into the most seemingly alike things into the most seemingly appropriate to you." (91).

This quote struct interesting to me because when you first begin you research you don't think of categorizing until you receive data. But the author here suggested that its good to categorize before you begin research in order to conduct a healthy process.  this way, you r research can be further analyze because you have Clusters of information to unpack.

"Coding and categorizing are heuristics to detect some of the possible patterns at work within the corpus, and an analytic memo further articulates your deductive, interview, and deductive thinking process on what things may mean."

This section helped me understand why the process of coding is important. Organisation of key phrases is important to analyze data but the idea of the coding being a thinking piece to the next step in research is good for progression and organisation. it is also goo to channel thought on anything new that may arrive in you process .

Research Design

Chapter 3: Research Design

Quote 1:" Finally your project must be something you yourself must be passionate about"(67).
entering my first stages of research, It is safe to say i held a very broad topic on arts engagement and the community.  But there was a lot of research already done. I began to make my research slightly more personal focusing directly on dance and the MCLA and Berkshire community. But then I began to loose passion. After some self reflection I was able to organize my own data and navigate the data I wanted to receive as well as the REAL question I wanted to ask, How do artist Develop in a community that is not their own? Out of the self reflection I generated the conversations that would get the answered to my questions, what questions to ask, who would I ask, What is the Importance. Also when i would hit a block in my research, personalizing the question or process was helpful to re-generate thought or further research.

Quote 2: "It almost always takes longer than you think it will to get what you need done"(81).

I must admit, as a college student, I am guilty of being the ultimate procrastinator. Doing a research project has taught me how to manage work in a timely manor. It has also helped me to manage life thoroughly. It was really helpful that I manage a step By step agenda of everything I had to do for My research. this helped me to better analyze what I was doing and why I was doing it. Taking a glance at the assignment before you actually commence working on it is a part of process i learned, and it helps generate thought before doing the section of the research I would tackle.  Also going back was easy due to the fact that I have reference to my thinking because I recorded the process.

The community of Jacob's pillow can relate to the steps it takes to develop artistic work for a diverse community. Achieved efforts are reflected in many different festivals. “ Inside out. “
Questions to the artist.

how would you describe yourself as an artist
How does community work influence artistic work.

How Important is reciprocity to the artist and the community.
What can expect to gain from this.

Along with these questions, I plan to jot down keywords and phrases that can provoke a more personal follow up question for each participant.

Literary Outline Pt 2

Title/Research Question: How Do artist develop in a community that's not their Own?
I. Introduction: There are a lot of arts organisations with community participants. There are also many arts communities without. I also hope to personally understand the need for artistic development by community influence.
A. Statement of Purpose: With this research I hope to Fuse the relationship between artist and community I also believe int important for artist to feel comfortable in order to fully be Immersed in the work tha
B. Need for your research: For my research I will need first had accounts on real artist in an arts community. Most will be Massachusetts College for Liberal Arts students. I will also need accounts from artist who run organisations that engage a lot with the community. This is important research to the community because communities have their own traditions, understandings and norms for artist to abide in while visiting said community. It is also important for artist to understand the context and audience before they begin constructing their work in the community.

Exercising your role as a member in the community first. (Artist entertain, Provoke thought, provide space for expression) Implementing your roll in the community, regardless of artistic skill. Stresses the importance of being invited into the community.
“We look for ways to Get involved in Community identity formation.” Also, talk to work with the artist in your community.
C. Topic B: Review of relevant sources
You are aesthetically helpful and pleasing to the community. As an artist you supplement, not replace the art that was currently flourishing in said community. “What made it a community was not magic, but labor… if your aesthetic process is open to that community, your work will not be superfluous. Your work might be useful

Main Idea 1

How do you work with community
Exercising your role as a member in the community first. (Artist entertain, Provoke thought, provide space for expression) Implementing your roll in the community, regardless of artistic skill.
“We look for ways to Get involved in Community identity formation.” Also, talk to work with the artist in your community

You are aesthetically helpful and pleasing to the community. As an artist you supplement, not replace the art that was currently flourishing in said community.  “What made it a community was not magic, but labor… if your aesthetic process is open to that community, your work will not be superfluous. Your work might be useful.
Culturally structure and reinvent a community. Build on or add to the already social aspects of community. “ community cultural development work is inevitably a responds to current social condition.”

Main idea 2
How many artist are active in communities that are not their own

America is a place full with refugees, artist migrate to different communities all the time.
Artist travel to other communities to create and use other ideas from that communitie. Artist in residence move for influence and inspiration. From 1999 through 2002, Liz Lerman Dance Exchange conducted Hallelujah, an unprecedented initiative in community-based artmaking and contemporary dance that directly engaged over 1000 participants in 15 U.S. communities from Deer Isle, Maine to Los Angeles, California.

Main idea 4
How does community work influence artistic work.

"I grew up in the ’50s in Kansas City during segregation, and the black community was very strong and very much connected.
That was important to me. It is about a community coming together to create."
Main idea 5
reciprocity

I’m a product of the Black Arts movement, which talked about that art is in relationship to the black community, so that was very much a part of it. I was very influenced by liberation theology.

Updates on Research

Ch 1: Qualitative Research Styles

Qualitative research is a vast term for the different approaches and methods of studying natural social life. Genres for Qualitative research include But aren't limited to
  • Ethnography
Documentation of social life in order to render an account of social life.
  • Culture
Social knowledge, not knowledge unique to an individual.
  • Phenomenology
The study of nature and the meaning of things.
  • Case Study
Focus on a single unit for analysis.
  • Etc..
Important section of this chapter would be  on Arts Based Research. The Author Jonny Sandala suggest that “Performing and visual arts media and methods sometimes collect, represent, and present their findings. “
Important to this would be evaluating research which focuses on people, Programs, Organisation, etc and asses the quality and effectiveness.  This is particularly important when  researching and Business or Arts organization due to the fact that there are so many different sections from the creative to financial sectors.

There are also many styles to Research such as ; realist ,confessional, and many many more. The all overall highlight how the information is present.  Overall, the research methods and styles must be compatible to the researcher for results to be successful.

CH 2: Data Collection And the Collector

Author Johnny Salander has very Particular Directions on how to collect your data through two particular methods. The One i'm going to blog about is the most common and probably the one i'm going to be using for my research, interview, but before we can collect the data, he suggest that we ourselves be observant of the type of data we want by simply identifying ourselves as a researcher. on page 32 he say that “ the researcher himself or herself who is generally regarded as the primary data collection instrument in Qualitative research. He says that research done by interview can range by Organising questions prior to the interview or (which I find more effective) Using  the general question and as conducting the interview  Writing down keywords to generate the conversation. I believe it brings a new stimuli to the conversation and may result in more direct data/ answers to your questions. When Transcribing the information the author suggest that you continuously refresh the content before documenting your findings. Lastly When managing your data the most important thing to do is to “Protect your data by saving it.” I would suggest this be in multiple area as to avoid  human error or unforeseen circumstances.
